RESOURCE GUIDE / WATER DAMAGE
After a burst pipe: a practical property checklist
A pipe failure can affect more than the room where water first appears. Start with safe access and a clear description of the event.

Stop the source only if safe
Avoid electrical hazards and unsafe ceilings. Contact the appropriate emergency service or utility for immediate danger. A plumbing repair and the cleanup of affected materials are separate parts of the response.
Map what you know
Record when the problem was found, where water traveled, and what finishes or contents were affected. Include rooms below or beside the visible leak. Take photographs from safe, accessible areas.
Discuss drying and subsequent repairs
Ask how materials will be assessed and which need removal. Prompt drying matters, but appearance alone does not confirm a cavity is ready for new finishes. Keep the remediation and repair documentation with the plumbing record.
