RESOURCE GUIDE / INSPECTION
Could there be mold behind the drywall?
Staining, a musty smell, or a previous leak may justify investigation. None of those signs alone reveals what is inside a closed wall.

Give the wall a history
When did the leak happen? Was the cavity opened or dried? Is the concern changing? Photos from the original event and invoices from repairs may be more useful than guessing from the current paint surface.
Do not open it just to look
Cutting or breaking suspect drywall can disturb material and create an uncontrolled opening. Discuss the need for investigation, protection of the room, and how any opening will be handled before proceeding.
Separate investigation from restoration
An inspection may recommend further access. If damage is found, ask what can be cleaned, what needs removal, and what repair work is separate. New drywall should not hide an unresolved leak or a cavity whose condition has not been addressed.
