RESOURCE GUIDE / BASEMENTS
After basement flooding: plan the next steps
When water has entered a basement, the visible puddle is only part of the assessment. Materials, the water source, and access all matter.

Wait for safe access
Do not enter standing water around electrical equipment or a space with unstable materials. Stop an active source only when it is safe. Call directly to describe urgent conditions and determine an appropriate response.
Record the event
Photograph accessible conditions, note when water was discovered, and keep records of the source and earlier repairs. Tell the assessor about finished walls, floor coverings, stored items, and any areas that were wet but now appear dry.
Plan drying and follow-through
Wet materials need prompt attention. Extraction and drying, removal of unsuitable materials, and mold remediation can be different parts of the work. Before reconstructing a finished basement, clarify moisture findings and who will correct the source of entry.
