A musty basement smell: where to start
An odor is a reason to look more closely, but it does not identify a source by itself. A short record of when and where you notice it can make an inspection more useful.

Notice the pattern
Does the smell change after rain, near a storage area, or when you enter a particular room? Note the location without removing finishes or disturbing suspect materials. Share any earlier sump, plumbing, or seepage events.
Look at the whole space
Finished walls, flooring, stored boxes, and utility areas can all be relevant. An accessible visual assessment can help determine where further investigation makes sense. Air fresheners may hide an odor without explaining it.
Ask what needs to be corrected
Humidity management, water-entry repairs, and removal of affected materials are different tasks. Clarify which conditions were observed and what remains uncertain. A plan based on the actual findings is more useful than repeated cleaning without a source investigation.
